What is a neck x-ray?

Neck x-ray, also known as cervical spine x-ray, is an imaging method to see the seven cervical vertebrae (bones of the spine in the neck region), the first vertebra of the thoracic spine (region of the spinal cord below cervical) and the disk spaces (cushion-like tissues between each vertebra).

During the test, an x-ray beam is passed through the body onto a special plate like a camera film. Depending on the type of tissue, the amount of radiation that penetrates may vary. Bones allow less radiation to pass through and hence appear white in an x-ray film; whereas, soft tissues like blood, skin, fat and muscle look dark grey as they allow maximum radiation to pass through. So for example, in case of a broken bone, a dark line is observed in the white bone.
