Refrigerators are one of the most important gadgets in your kitchen. They keep your food fresh and healthy for long term consumption. But this does not mean that you shove everything that you buy from the grocery store inside a fridge. In fact, there are certain foods you should never put in the fridge. The reason for this is that refrigeration kills the flavour of these foods and renders them unfit for consumption. Here are some food items that should be stored at room temperature and not inside your fridge.

Bread

We all love to eat bread with butter or jam at breakfast. Storing bread in cold temperature makes it incredibly tough to eat, turning it stale far more quickly. The best way to keep your bread fresh and soft is to keep it at room temperature and try to consume it within 4 days.

Potatoes

Putting potatoes in the fridge will make them rot faster. Cold temperature generally breaks down the quality of potatoes drastically and also affect their taste. Potatoes should be stored in paper bags and at mildly cool temperatures. Avoid using plastic bags to keep them fresh.

Fruits

Cold temperature can change the colour of fruits and even alter their taste.  So, it is best to keep fruits like bananas, apples, oranges and berries away from your fridge. Alternatively, you can refrigerate fruits for only 30 minutes right before you eat them to make them crunchier. Orange and lemon are best kept at room temperature. Though ripe avocado can be placed inside the fridge.

Honey

Honey is a timeless nutritional supplement and naturally preserved food. Even a 1000-year-old jar of honey will smell and taste fresh. Therefore it does not need to be refrigerated. Putting honey into the fridge will only make it hard for you to scoop it out. Optimally you should store your honey in an airtight conditioner, at mild room temperatures and at low humidity.

Tomatoes

If you want to keep the original taste and texture of tomatoes and love to use them fresh, then avoid refrigerating them as much as you can. Storing tomatoes in the fridge can make them rot faster and even alter their flavour. Keeping tomatoes in paper bags and baskets is the best way to store them.

Onions

Much like tomatoes, onions should be kept in dry and ventilated areas. Putting them in a fridge can increase their moisture and make them rot faster. However, if an onion has been cut, it can be stored in the fridge for short durations.

Garlic

Garlic works well in a dry, dark, ventilated area and at room temperature. The lack of light is to avoid them from sprouting, which alters their taste. Also, fresh garlic can become mouldy when stored in a fridge.

This is just a small list of things that do not require any space in your fridge. If you want to increase the taste and quality of these items, the best you can do is to remove these items from your fridge keep them outside at room temperature. It can also help them retain their original flavour.
