While having vaginal sex for the first time, the hymen may stretch, which may lead to bleeding or pain. It is not necessary that this happens with everyone. Also, it is important to understand that once the hymen is stretched and opened, it cannot go back to its previous state. Let us know in detail about the rupture of the hymen, its symptoms and the pain it causes -

  • Some women have more hymen tissue than others, in such a situation when the hymen stretches, pain is felt and bleeding also starts.
  • If the pain and bleeding does not go away after having vaginal sex for the first time, it can be made a less painful experience by gently stretching the hymen tissue with the help of fingers.
  • Pain or irritation can also be felt during vaginal sex when the vagina is not properly lubricated. It is absolutely normal if there is not enough lubrication in the vagina. In such a situation, the pain caused by hymen can be reduced by using lube.

Following reasons can also be there for breaking of hymen -

  • Cycling
  • Gymnastics
  • Playing
  • Inserting something into the vagina (for example, a tampon, finger, or sex toy)
  • Pelvic exam by gynecologist

Some people believe that when the hymen gets stretched and opened it means virginity, that is, the woman is not virgin, but having a hymen and being virgin are two different things. It is important to understand here that virginity is a social ideology and not a medical term. Virginity is usually associated with vaginal sex, which happens between a man and a woman. It leaves out other methods of sex and also sexuality. Myths related to virginity are a sign of danger. In the past as well as today, people associate virginity with women. It cannot be told by looking or feeling a woman's hymen whether she has had sex before or not.
