As many as 37,724 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, taking the total number of patients in India to nearly 12 lakh (1.2 million). On Wednesday, 22 June 2020, the number of cases in the country had risen to 11.93 lakh patients with the addition of the new wave of patients over the previous 24-hour period.

Besides the addition of thousands of new patients across the country, another 648 deaths were also reported to have taken place in the same 24 hours, taking the total death count in India to 28,732.

However, another 28,472 patients were also declared to have recovered from the coronavirus infection over the same period, taking the total number of recovered patients to over 7.53 lakh, with the recovery rate having climbed above 63%, and the fatality rate dropping to 2.40.

On the other hand, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said that more than 1.47 crore tests have been conducted so far to identify those infected by the viral infection. Out of these, 3.43 lakh tests were done on Tuesday. COVID-19 has a positivity rate of over 8% in India after the release of new testing data.

  2. At least 50,000 patients in seven states

In Maharashtra, the number of patients of COVID-19 exceeded the 3.25-lakh mark, with another 8,336 people being confirmed to be COVID-19 positive, while another 246 deaths were recorded over the past 24 hours.

The death toll in Maharashtra increased to 12,276, while the number of patients has gone beyond 3.27 lakh in the state alone. In Tamil Nadu, the total number of patients crossed 1.80 lakh, out of which about 2,626 infected have succumbed to the illness. Over the last 24 hours, 4,965 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Tamil Nadu, while 75 deaths were confirmed. 

The number of deaths in Delhi over the same period stood at 27, with 1,349 new patients having tested positive for the virus. The total number of cases in the Capital have gone past 1.25 lakh, while the number of deaths is now at 3,690.

The number of people affected by COVID-19 in Gujarat has crossed the 50,000 mark. On Tuesday, 1,026 new patients were found to be positive, while another 34 people were confirmed dead, taking the death count in the state to 2,196, making Gujarat the seventh state in the country where COVID-19 has infected at least 50 thousand people. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are already included in this list.

The number of COVID-19 patients in Karnataka went over 71,000 with 3,649 new patients, out of which 1,464 have died. In Andhra Pradesh, this figure increased to 758 deaths, with about 5,000 new patients confirmed in the state on Tuesday, after which the total number of infected in the state rose to 58,668. In Uttar Pradesh too, the number of infected went over 53,000 with 2,128 new cases, out of which 1,229 deaths were reported.

The number of patients in Telangana and West Bengal can also cross the 50,000-mark this week. So far, 47,705 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Telangana, with 429 deaths, while West Bengal’s total number of patients has also gone past 47,000, and another 1,182 patients have died. 

The death toll in Rajasthan is 577, with the figure of infected people reaching 31, 373. Bihar may soon be included in the list of states with 30,000 patients as well, with the number of people infected in the state nearing 29,000. This figure is 27,000 in Haryana and more than 25,000 in Assam.
