Yes, RT Cef can treat strep throat or streptococcal pharyngitis which is an infection of the throat that results in a sore throat caused by bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes. It can also treat tonsillitis which is inflammation of tonsils caused by the same bacteria (Streptococcus pyogenes). Since RT Cef is a prescription drug and an antibiotic, you are advised to not take it by yourself.
RT Cef contains cefalexin which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against a wide variety of bacteria. It works by preventing the cell wall synthesis in bacteria by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). The cell wall protects the bacteria from the environment, in the absence of a cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. RT Cef is effective against bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Beta-hemolytic streptococci, Moraxella catarrhalis, Staphylococci strains, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella species.
Discontinuing RT Cef on your own can increase the chances of bacterial resistance and infection relapse. It is recommended that you always consult your doctor if you have decided to discontinue this medicine.
