Ifoneon

Ifoneon combines Ifosfamide, an alkylating agent used in chemotherapy, with Mesna, a uroprotective agent. Ifosfamide treats various cancers, including testicular cancer, sarcomas, and lymphomas, while Mesna prevents hemorrhagic cystitis caused by Ifosfamide.

Mechanism of Action

• Ifosfamide interferes with DNA replication by cross-linking DNA strands, leading to cell death, particularly in rapidly dividing cancer cells.
• Mesna binds to the toxic metabolites of Ifosfamide, preventing damage to the bladder lining.

Onset of Action

Therapeutic effects are often observed after several cycles of treatment.

Duration of Action

Ifosfamide has a half-life of 4 to 7 hours. Mesna acts within hours to provide bladder protection.

Dosage

• Ifosfamide: Typically 1.2 g/m² IV daily for 5 consecutive days every 3 weeks (varies by indication).
• Mesna: Dosed concurrently with Ifosfamide at 20% of the Ifosfamide dose, given at 0, 4, and 8 hours.

Side Effects

• Nausea and vomiting
• Hemorrhagic cystitis
• Bone marrow suppression
• Alopecia
• Neuropathy

Precautions

• Monitor blood counts regularly to avoid severe bone marrow suppression.
• Adequate hydration is necessary to minimize bladder toxicity.
• Use effective contraception during and after treatment.
• Avoid if severely impaired liver or kidney function is present.
