No, Rifagut does not cause weight gain. It has not been reported by the patients who are taking this drug but Rifagut has been reported to cause weight loss in a few patients with travelers’ diarrhea. Yes, Rifagut may cause orange urine because it is an analog of rifampicin. This side effect is reversible and unharmful in nature which goes away after discontinuation of this drug.

Rifagut works by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis which is essential for bacterial growth. The absence of these proteins results in stunned bacterial growth due to which bacteria is not able to survive. For hepatic encephalopathy Rifagut works by inhibiting the growth of enteric ammonia-producing bacteria which are present in our gut, this results in the indirect reduction of serum ammonia level. In irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, how Rifagut works are still unknown but it is presumed that it works by changing the bacterial flora in small intestine and reduction in gas.
