Yes, Rifidia is used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). It has been found very effective for IBS-D. Rifidia is given three times a day up to 14 days in patients of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea.
Rifidia works by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis which is essential for bacterial growth. The absence of these proteins results in stunned bacterial growth due to which bacteria is not able to survive. For hepatic encephalopathy Rifidia works by inhibiting the growth of enteric ammonia-producing bacteria which are present in our gut, this results in the indirect reduction of serum ammonia level. In irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, how Rifidia works are still unknown but it is presumed that it works by changing the bacterial flora in small intestine and reduction in gas.
Rifidia in combination with other antibiotics might be used to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) but it is generally not used and not approved for the treatment of the infection caused by H. pylori.
Yes, Rifidia might cause a headache. It is a rare side effect of this drug. However, the exact cause of a headache is still unknown. If you experience a severe headache after taking this drug, take a mild painkiller, apply balm and take rest even after this if the pain does not subside then discuss with your doctor without any further delay.
Rifidia can be taken 2 -3 times a day by mouth or as advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food as the presence of food does not affect the absorption of this drug. Precautions must be taken in patients with improper liver function.
