Senval is a brand name for sodium valproate. It is a prescription drug that belongs to the class of medicine called anti-epileptic drug, also known as an anticonvulsant and anti-seizure medication. It is used in the treatment of epilepsy (seizure). It is also used to treat mania associated bipolar disorder and prevent the episodes of a migraine headache. The injectable form of this drug is used to treat complex partial seizures, simple and complex absence seizures.
Senval works by relaxing the muscles of the body and suppressing abnormal activity of nerve cells in the brain through an increase in activity of a chemical messenger known as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) by inhibiting the enzymes which are responsible for the catabolism of GABA. It also exerts effect altering the sodium channel in the brain. It also works by stabilizing the potassium channel and cause a direct membrane-stabilizing effect. Thus, providing relief from the seizure and mania associated with bipolar disorder.
