Torasemide is the brand name for torsemide. It belongs to a class of drugs known as loop diuretics. It is available in the form of an injection and tablets. It is used for the management of edema associated with congestive heart failure. In low doses, it is also used to treat hypertension.

Yes, an overdose of Torasemide is associated with hypokalemia. It is a condition in which the blood potassium levels are too low. Symptoms are muscle fatigue, muscle cramps and feeling weak. Low potassium levels can lead to a heart problem. Therefore, if you are taking a loop diuretic, talk to your doctor about preventing hypokalemia. In addition, follow the dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor.

Yes, Torasemide may cause allergy in rare cases. The symptoms could be rash, itching, dizziness, swelling of the tongue, throat, and face, difficulty in breathing, etc. If you experience any of these symptoms, discontinue using Torasemide and talk to your doctor immediately.

No, Torasemide is not potassium sparing. Rather, it is a loop diuretic that removes excess of water and electrolytes like potassium from the body. One may need to eat potassium-rich foods or a potassium supplement while one uses Torasemide. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic which prevents the loss of potassium from the body.

Torasemide works by increasing the rate of urine formation by inhibiting the sodium and potassium reabsorption from the kidney, this causes more frequent urination than normal. the increased flow of urination leads to a decrease in blood volume and removal of this extra fluid from your body results in a decrease in edema. The decreased blood volume causes relaxation of the walls of blood vessels and this results in a decrease in blood pressure which gives relief from swelling and high blood pressure to the patient.
