The cause of gray baby syndrome is that the newborn baby lacks the some liver enzymes which are necessary to metabolize and removes this drug from the body. The accumulation of the chloramphenicol in the body leads to toxicity which causes development of symptoms such as vomiting, gray color of the skin, blue discoloration of lips and skin. To avoid gray baby syndrome the doses of Vanmycetin must be lowered and adjusted as per the need.
Vanmycetin contains chloramphenicol which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting the protein synthesis in bacteria which needs to survive. In the absence of protein, the bacterial growth is stunned and slowed. It can also kill the bacteria in higher doses. Vanmycetin is effective against a wide range of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria such as Salmonella species, Rickettsia species, Neisseria meningitidis, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, and Staphylococcus pneumoniae.
