The total number of people infected by the COVID-19 infection continued its rise in India, with the total number of cases having crossed the 11-lakh mark as of Sunday, 19 July 2020.

Over 40,000 new patients were confirmed across the country over the last 24 hours as the number of cases continue to rise steadily. Based on the number of cases countries around the world have recorded, India is third, only behind the United States and Brazil.

Another 681 people were also confirmed to have died of the coronavirus infection in the same 24-hour period. 

According to the latest data released by the Union Health Ministry, the number of coronavirus infections in the country has gone up to 11,18,043, while the death toll has climbed to 27,500. However, the number of people who have recovered from COVID-19 has also gone past seven lakh. On Sunday, more than 22 thousand infected people across the country were declared free from the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Based on the Health Ministry figures, the fatality rate due to the viral infection has come down from 2.50% to 2.45%, which according to them is one of the lowest in the world. The recovery rate of the infection has also increased to 62.61%.

On the other hand, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said that more than 14 million tests have been conducted across the country to identify the patients of COVID-19. Out of these, 2.56 lakh tests have been done in the last 24 hours. After this increase, the positive rate of COVID-19 has been around 8%.

  1. Over 9,500 cases in a day in Maharashtra

The number of COVID-19 patients exceeded 3 lakh last weekend in Maharashtra, with another 9,518 people found to be infected by the SARS-COV-2 virus in the state, which is by far the highest number of positive cases recorded in a single day in Maharashtra. On Sunday itself, the number of people killed by COVID-19 in the state was close to 12,000 with 258 new deaths. 

In Tamil Nadu, the state with the second highest infections in the country, this figure is 2,481. So far, more than 1.70 lakh people have been confirmed to be infected in the state. Around 5,000 new cases were reported in the southern state on Sunday, and 78 new deaths were confirmed over the same 24-hour period.

At the same time, Delhi became one more state in the country to have recorded over 1 lakh recoveries from the COVID-19 infection. Significantly, 1,22,793 people have been found to be infected with the coronavirus so far in the state, of whom as many as 3,628 have died.

Number of states with 50,000 patients may increase

Karnataka became the fourth state in the country to have more than 50,000 COVID-19 patients last week, with the figure having crossed 63,000, and as many as 4,120 new patients being confirmed in the state, with another 91 deaths recorded. 

States like Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh were closing in on 50,000 COVID-19 cases in the respective states as both of them saw a steady rise in new infections.More than 5,000 new cases were confirmed  in Andhra Pradesh, after which the total number of patients reached 49,650. 

In Uttar Pradesh, the number of infected patients exceeded 49 thousand, of which 1,146 have died, with more than 2,200 infections confirmed in the state on Sunday. 

Some other states may also be included in this list over the next few days, with Gujarat’s total number of cases rising to over 48,000, with 2,142 deaths due to the illness. On Sunday, 965 new cases were reported in the state. 

With more than 45,000 cases, Telangana is also set to record 50,000 cases in the southern state with no signs of letting up. On Sunday, about 1,300 new patients were confirmed in Telangana, with 415 deaths being recorded.

Other important national updates related to COVID-19 are as follows.

  • Number of infected in West Bengal crosses 42,000; 1,112 killed
  • In Rajasthan, the number of patients nearing 30,000; 559 have died
  • More than 26,000 people have been infected in Bihar and Haryana
  • About 24,000 cases were reported in Assam, while more than 22,000 cases were reported in Madhya Pradesh.
  • After Kerala (12,480), number of infected in Punjab now crossed 10,000 patients with 254 deaths
