Yes, Alkanol Syrup causes difficulty in breathing (dyspnoea) in some cases but this occurs very rarely. It is a known side effect of this drug. This is caused by the increased concentrations of sodium bicarbonate ions in blood and increased pH levels this leads to decrease in breathing rate (respiratory rate). How does Alkanol Syrup work?

Alkanol Syrup contains disodium Hydrogen Citrate (an alkalinizing agent) which is metabolized into bicarbonate. Bicarbonate causes an increase in pH of urine (alkalinizes urine) by promoting the excretion of free bicarbonate ions, this leads to increase in solubility of cysteine which is present in the urine and this results in ionization of uric acid into more soluble urate ion. In this way Alkanol Syrup works and helps the body to get rid of excessive uric acid.
