Yes, Carefex can treat strep throat or streptococcal pharyngitis which is an infection of the throat that results in a sore throat caused by bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes. Since Carefex is a prescription drug and an antibiotic, you are advised not to take Carefex by yourself.
Yes, Carefex might be used to treat sinusitis (Inflammation of cavities situated around the nasal passages) caused by bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae). However, because of its poor activity against these bacteria Carefex is not recommended usually for the treatment of sinus infection (sinusitis).
Carefex contains cefalexin which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It works by preventing the cell wall synthesis in bacteria by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). The cell wall protects the bacteria from the environment, in the absence of this cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. Carefex is effective against a wide range of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
