Wegovy Information

Wegovy is a prescription medication containing semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used primarily for the treatment of obesity and overweight conditions. It works by influencing appetite regulation, increasing satiety, and slowing gastric emptying, which can lead to reduced calorie intake and weight loss.

Indications:

Chronic Weight Management:

Wegovy is indicated for chronic weight management in adults with:

  • Obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²), or
  • Overweight (BMI ≥27 kg/m²) with at least one weight-related comorbidity (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia).

Wegovy is used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Type 2 Diabetes Management (off-label use):

  • Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, is also used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes for blood sugar control, but Wegovy is primarily approved for weight management.

GLP-1 Agonist:

1. Wegovy contains semaglutide, which is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone.

2. It works by mimicking GLP-1 to regulate blood sugar levels and control appetite. It:

  • Stimulates insulin release when blood sugar levels are elevated.
  • Inhibits glucagon secretion, which reduces glucose production by the liver.
  • Slows gastric emptying, promoting feelings of fullness and reducing hunger.
  • Reduces food intake by acting on the brain’s appetite centers, contributing to weight loss.

Drug Interactions:

Antidiabetic Medications:-

  • Caution is advised when used with other antidiabetic drugs (insulin or sulfonylureas) as it may enhance the risk of hypoglycemia.
  • Blood glucose levels should be monitored and adjustments in other diabetic medications may be needed.

Oral Medications:

  • Due to the delayed gastric emptying effect, Wegovy may affect the absorption of other oral medications. It is advisable to separate the administration of oral medications from Wegovy by at least 1 hour.

Other Drugs Affecting Blood Pressure or Fluid Balance:

  • Patients should be monitored when using Wegovy alongside medications affecting blood pressure or fluid balance, as changes in weight can impact these systems.
