Mupimet is a brand name of mupirocin and it comes in the form of topical ointment and cream. It belongs to the class of drug known as topical antibiotics which is effective against Gram-positive bacteria. It is a prescription drug which is used in the treatment of bacterial skin infections such as impetigo (school sores), infection of the hair root (folliculitis), and boils.

No, Mupimet does not treat athlete's foot (also known as tinea pedis) that is a fungal infection which causes itching, stinging, scaling, and redness of the foot. Mupimet contains mupirocin which is an antibiotic that only kills the bacteria not fungi which causes athlete's foot.

Mupimet works by inhibiting RNA synthetase enzyme in bacteria that is essential for bacterial protein synthesis due to which the bacteria cannot make new proteins. The absence of these proteins results in stunned bacterial growth due to which bacteria is not able to survive. Mupimet is effective against mainly gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
