Pencip is a narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic which belongs to the class of drugs known as penicillins. It works by preventing the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). In the absence of a cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. It also kills the bacteria during the stage of their active multiplication. It is effective against penicillin-susceptible bacteria such as staphylococci (barring the penicillinase-producing strains), streptococci (groups A, B, C, G, H, L, and M), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Treponema pallidum, and Neisseria meningitidis.
