Retopyrin is a brand name for paracetamol. It is an analgesic and antipyretic medication used to treat mild to moderate pain and fever. Even WHO has considered this drug to be an essential medicine for basic healthcare requirements. Paracetamol is one of the most commonly used 'over-the-counter' medicine. It is often prescribed as one of the first-line treatment options for pain and fever with minimum side effects.

What is the treatment for Retopyrin poisoning?

As we know Retopyrin is most widely used 'over-the-counter' analgesic/antipyretic medicine. However, paracetamol overdose can cause serious adverse effects on the liver, it may be fatal. But fortunately, there is an antidote, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) given within 8 hours of Retopyrin ingestion which usually can prevent all serious side effects of Retopyrin poisoning. However, do not take NAC without consulting a doctor as your doctor will tell you the right way and methods to help you relieve from this drug poisoning.

How does Retopyrin work?

Although it's believed that Retopyrin works mainly in the central nervous system (Brain and Spine). It prevents the release of prostaglandin, which is responsible for increasing pain and body temperature. It effectively reduces the intensity of pain signals to the brain.

Retopyrin is primarily not used to treat a common cold and sore throat. It can only relieve cold-related symptoms such as a fever, headache, earache, and aching joints. It doesn't help in relieving cough or stuffy nose.
