Most people experience dizziness as a sensation of light-headedness or loss of balance. Dizziness is also called vertigo at times, although they are two different symptoms. Dizziness is usually associated with specific sensations that include blackout before eyes, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and excessive sweating. These episodes may be triggered by the movement of the neck. Sometimes dizziness is associated with an abnormal sound in the ears (tinnitus).

Regardless, dizziness is not a condition in itself but a symptom of an underlying disease. Common causes of dizziness include Meniere disease, ear infection, headache (vestibular migraine), mental stress, medicines (antidepressants), disorders in the blood circulation (low blood pressure), problems in the functioning of the heart (irregular heartbeat), metabolic disorders and cancer in the brain or other disorders of the central nervous system. Treatment of the cause is the key to the management of vertigo. Additionally, antihistamines and antiemetics (for vomiting) are standard medicines used in the treatment of dizziness.

Homeopathic medicines help in relieving dizziness that is not associated with a structural abnormality or damage to the structure of an organ. Homeopathy also helps in reducing the frequency and intensity of dizziness that occurs due to conditions such as inflammation in ears and anxiety. Some of the commonly used homeopathic medicines in the treatment of dizziness include argentum nitricum, gelsemium, conium maculatum, bryonia alb, pulsatilla, cocculus indicus, ambra grisea and petroleum.

The action of homeopathic medicines is prone to get affected by certain lifestyle factors. A few steps to facilitate uninterrupted action of the medicines are mentioned below.

Do’s:

  • Follow a healthy and nutritious dietary regimen.
  • Keep your mind busy by reading informative articles and books.
  • Include moderate exercise, such as walking in fresh and open-air, in your daily routine.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid drinking strong stimulants such as coffee, soups made from spices and medicinal herbs and vegetable soups that have medicinal effects.
  • Avoid eating spoilt or stale vegetables and meat.
  • Avoid food items and beverages that contain artificial flavours or colours.
  • Avoid using strong-smelling perfumes or air fresheners.
  • Avoid unhygienic and humid living conditions

Homeopathic medicines are prescribed on the basis of the law of similars. Substances that produce a certain set of symptoms in healthy people are used in the treatment of similar symptoms when they appear due to an underlying disease in a sick individual.

The medicines to be prescribed are selected on the basis of the characteristic symptoms of the mind and body of the patient. Homeopathic medicines stimulate the natural healing power of the body and thus help in relieving the distressing symptom of dizziness. A well-selected constitutional homeopathic medicine not only helps in relieving dizziness but also it improves the general health of the person taking the treatment.

These medicines are safely used in children, pregnant women and old people without any harmful side effects

Homeopathic medicines used in the treatment of dizziness are not associated with risks or harmful effects. These medicines are prescribed in highly diluted doses and hence do not cause toxic effects in the body. However, if not taken in appropriate doses, homeopathic medicines may produce symptoms that are not related to the disease.

A constitutional homeopathic medicine selected by a qualified homeopathic physician is highly beneficial in the treatment of dizziness or vertigo, especially due to functional causes. Homeopathic medicines also help in reducing other associated symptoms of dizziness, such as nausea, vomiting and headache. However, the scope of homeopathy is limited when dizziness arises due to any change or abnormality in the structure of an organ (such as cancer in the brain).
