Geriflo blocks receptors in the prostate, prostatic capsule, prostate urethra, and bladder neck. When these receptors are blocked, smooth muscle relaxation occurs in the bladder neck and prostate, decreasing the urinary outflow resistance in men.
Geriflo is available as a capsule and tablet to be taken by mouth in an empty stomach because food can delay the absorption of this drug and also decrease its bioavailability. Precaution must be taken in the patient with prostate cancer, sulfa allergy, and Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome.
