It works by inhibiting the protein synthesis in bacteria which needs to survive. In the absence of protein, the bacterial growth is stunned and slowed. It can also kill the bacteria in higher doses. Taurcol is a brand name of chloramphenicol and it comes in the various dosage forms such as an oral tablet, capsule, syrup, and eye drops. It is a prescription drug that belongs to the class of medications called amphenicols. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is active against a wide variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is mainly used in the treatment of psittacosis also known as parrot fever, rickettsial infection, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, and also sometimes in the management of typhoid fever.
