Cockroach borne disease

Cockroaches are found in many countries around the world, including India. There are more than 3,500 known species of cockroaches. They can be found in most homes and can give rise to various health concerns. This is primarily why people are always looking for ways to drive cockroaches away.

Cockroaches live in flocks and are especially active at night. During the daytime, they stay in dark places like cracks in walls and kitchen sink pipes and drains. Cockroaches eat a wide variety of food but are specifically attracted to starch and sweet things.

Cockroaches dwell in moisture and dirt. Their life cycle has three stages: egg, nymph and adult. Nymphs and small cockroaches have no wings and are only a few millimetres long.

On average, a female cockroach lays eggs about 30 times over its entire lifetime and can lay 10 to 40 eggs at a time. It deposits the eggs in a capsule called ootheca. In some species, this ootheca remains attached to the back of the female's body for a few weeks. The eggs hatch in one or three months, depending on temperature and humidity. Cockroaches are white when they hatch, but their colour becomes darker hours after they are born.

Cockroaches carry a number of diseases, from cholera to E. coli infection. Read this article for details about diseases caused by cockroaches and how to prevent them.

In this disease, the person starts experiencing symptoms like joint pain, hair loss, blisters and skin numbness. Skin lesions are characteristic signs of leprosy and are caused due to damaged veins. The progression of the disease is continuous. The upper respiratory tract gets affected too.

  • Meningitis: Cockroaches are also considered to be the major cause of the spread of meningitis, or inflammation of the meninges layer around the brain and spinal cord. This can happen if they track enterococcus bacteria on to food and water.
