The National Institutes of Health define erectile dysfunction as the failure to achieve or maintain sufficient erection for satisfactory sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is a self-diagnosable condition that may last for a lifetime.

The pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction involves reduced blood flow to the penile muscles. In its normal state, the penis remains flaccid, with minimal arterial flow to its muscles for nutritional purposes. An increase in the pressure of blood raises the penis from its normal position to an erect state. An obstacle in any of these pathways causes erectile dysfunction.

The causes of erectile dysfunction are more often related to psychological issues than physical abnormalities. Erectile dysfunction is broadly classified as primary and secondary. In primary erectile dysfunction, the patient may never have been able to achieve or sustain an erection. Primary erectile dysfunction occurs rarely and is almost always caused by psychological factors or obvious anatomic defects. In secondary erectile dysfunction, a man who was previously able to attain erections acquires this condition later in life.

Secondary erectile dysfunction is more common and results from a physical cause in more than 90% of cases. Many men with secondary erectile dysfunction may develop psychological difficulties that worsen the problem. Psychological factors that contribute to erectile dysfunction include guilt, fear of intimacy, stressdepression and anxiety

The clinical diagnosis of erectile dysfunction usually involves a detailed medical and sexual history; physical examination of the genitourinary, nervous and circulatory systems; evaluation of blood pressure and hormone levels; urine and blood tests to check for diseases that can lead to erectile dysfunction; and imaging studies. Conventional treatment of the condition depends on the underlying cause of the condition and involves hormone replacement therapy, psychotherapy, lifestyle management, and in rare cases, surgery

Homeopathic treatment of erectile dysfunction is more specific and tailored to the patient's needs. Not every remedy suits everyone equally. However, when taken under the guidance of a qualified doctor, the right remedy not only helps relieve disease symptoms but also improve the overall health of the patient.

Homeopathic remedies help excite nerves, restore the insufficient blood flow by clearing mental obstacles or by controlling inflammation in case of secondary erectile dysfunction. These remedies also help clear psychological conditions that might be causing erectile dysfunction.

Some of the homeopathic remedies that can be used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction include agnus castus, anacardium orientale, antimonium crudum, caladium seguinum, cobaltum metallicum, conium maculatum, dioscorea villosa, gelsemium sempervirens, lycopodium clavatum, nux vomica, phosphorus, picricum acidum, sabal serrulata, salix nigra, selenium metallicum and yohimbinum.

Currently, there is no such study that proves the efficiency of Homeopathic remedies for erectile dysfunction. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, it is difficult to prove the effect of homeopathic remedies since they contain such minute quantities of active ingredients, which could possibly not have any effect. Though, there are certain homeopathic remedies which have been proven to be effective and have a therapeutic action against disease conditions.

Homeopathic remedies prescribed by experienced and qualified homeopathic physicians rarely cause side effects. Since these remedies are obtained from natural sources, diluted immensely and administered in minute doses, they produce the best therapeutic results and are safe to use. They can be safely taken even with conventional medicines. However, sometimes patients experience a transient worsening of symptoms, which is a normal reaction produced just before the remedy shows its therapeutic effects.

Erectile dysfunction is a condition in which the patient is not able to maintain an erection for having sex. It can be psychological or have an underlying physical cause. Conventionally, erectile dysfunction is treated with hormone replacement therapy and psychotherapy. Surgery is needed in rare cases.

Homeopathic treatment of erectile dysfunction also aims to treat the underlying cause of the condition. However, the right remedy, when taken under the guidance of a qualified doctor, also helps improve the overall health of the patient.

Homeopathic medications are made from natural substances that are potentised before use and administered in minute doses after carefully assessing the physical and mental makeup of an individual. Thus, these remedies are considered safe to consume and do not generally have any side effects.
