No, Herzovir is not an antibiotic. It is an antiviral drug which is used to treat infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) such as genital herpes. It is also used in the treatment of chickenpox and herpes zoster (shingles) which are caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV).
Take Herzovir as directed by your doctor. Do not take this medicine longer than prescribed to avoid unpleasant side effects.
No, Herzovir does not prevent the transmission of herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2) in patients who are immunocompromised (weak immune system). Clinical studies have shown that it is not effective in preventing the transmission of herpes. Hence, you are recommended to use barrier methods such as a condom during intercourse to prevent the transmission of herpes.
No, Herzovir does not prevent chickenpox. Clinical studies suggest that Herzovir alone cannot prevent chickenpox caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in immunocompromised patients (weak immune system) but Herzovir can successfully treat chickenpox with the combination of other antiviral drugs.
