Doctors for Follicles in ovary

A follicle is a small fluid-filled sac in a woman's ovary that contains the developing egg. In the initial stage of puberty, there is about 3 lakh to 4 lakh eggs in the body of women. Many follicles start developing during each menstrual cycle, but only 1 follicle matures in the middle of menstruation, that is, many follicles do not mature during this period.

In the middle of the menstrual cycle, when the follicle matures and grows to the right size, the sac (follicle) bursts and releases the egg, which means the egg is ready to be fertilized. This usually happens about 14 days after the start of the menstrual cycle.

It is difficult to say exactly how many follicles are normal to have in each ovary, as it is virtually impossible to count all the follicles present in an ovary. This is because it can be very difficult to count primordial follicles by looking at them with the naked eye. Also, it is difficult to count by any test. However, several follicles begin to develop with each menstrual cycle, with usually only one follicle releasing an egg. Whereas, other follicles get destroyed.

Once the primordial follicles start growing toward maturity, they are known as antral follicles. Through antral follicle count or basal antral follicle count, follicles that are capable of growing to maturity can be counted. Those follicles are measured and counted through a transvaginal ultrasound scan. The number of antral follicles varies every month.

If the antral follicle count is 6-10, then the woman is considered to have adequate or normal ovarian reserve. If this number is less than 6, the ovarian reserve can be considered low. Whereas, the high reserve is more than 12. Just keep in mind that these tests do not show the total number of follicles present in a woman's ovaries.
