Betapax is a brand name of propranolol and it is available in the form of tablet and capsule. It belongs to the class of drug known as beta-blockers (nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent). It is a prescription drug which is used for the management of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), and essential tremor. It is also used for the prophylaxis (prevention) of a common migraine headache and to decrease or prevent the heart complications associated with various diseases.
Take Betapax as long as it is recommended by your doctor. Using this drug beyond that period might not be good for you because it can lead to unintended side effects.
Betapax contains propranolol which is presumed to work through multiple mechanisms. It reduces blood pressure and slows down the fast heartbeat by binding to certain receptors (beta-adrenoceptors) in the smooth muscles of heart which prevents the effect of adrenaline and noradrenaline. It also prevents the release of an enzyme (renin) from the kidneys that helps in decreasing blood pressure because this enzyme plays an important role in the absorption of sodium and water from the kidneys which raises blood volume and increases blood pressure. Betapax also acts on the heart and decreases heart rate which also contributes to decreasing blood pressure and decreasing myocardial (heart) oxygen demand.
No, Betapax does not cause a headache. It has not been reported by the patients who are taking this drug. In fact, this drug is used for the prevention of a common migraine headache. However, the exact mechanism by which Betapax works in the prevention of migraine attacks is unknown but it is a safe and effective drug to prevent a migraine headache.
No, Betapax is not approved for the treatment of insomnia (sleeplessness). Hence you are advised not to take this drug by yourself to induce sleep.
