Rhutrex contains methotrexate which is a chemotherapy drug that works in cancer by preventing the DNA synthesis of cancerous cells. It inhibits dihydrofolic acid reductase enzyme which is important for the formation of tetrahydrofolate. Tetrahydrofolate is essential for the synthesis of some DNA components of the cancerous cells. Incase of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn's disease Rhutrex works by suppressing the body's normal immune response to inflammation. Yes, Rhutrex may cause anemia, this occurs only in a few cases. It is a rare side effect of this drug. It occurs due to bone marrow suppression which might cause anemia (low red blood cells count), leukopenia (low white blood cells count), thrombocytopenia (low platelets count), and pancytopenia (low red cells, white cells, and platelets). However, this effect is reversible in nature and the function of bone marrow is restored after discontinuation of this drug.
